After reviewing the achievements of 5’500 participants from 54 different countries, a jury of 40 professors, journalists and independent designers chose to award the highest honor of the Red Dot Award: Product Design Red Dot: Best of Best 2017 “at the replica Hublot Big Bang Meca-10 Magic Gold.
The Red Dot Award is a competition organized by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany. It was born in 1955, rewarding for the first time the most deserving concepts of the time. Since the 1990s, Professor Doctor Peter Zec has brought this institution to the top of the international scene. A Red Dot Award has the design that an Oscar is in the cinema: it equals the supreme reward.
This prize rewards the tremendous amount of work involved in the development of the Meca-10 Magic Gold model, a concentration of the best that Hublot has to offer in terms of watchmaking, technical quality, innovation and aesthetics. This watch reconciles retro and futuristic.
Retro, like the construction game to which his name refers. Back in childhood when the imagination was in power: the Meca-10 pays tribute to all those who have spent hours thinking and mounting mechanic parts. Plates, wheels, gears … everything is there, but pushed to an unprecedented technical level allowing the development of a new manufacturing movement with atypical architecture.
Futuristic, like this same movement HUB1201 manufacture: fully developed by the replica Hublot teams, it comprises 223 pieces and is equipped with two barrels operating in parallel. The power reserve of ten days is indicated by a rack-and-pinion system. Futuristic also as the innovative material of which its case, the Magic Gold. Developed jointly by Hublot’s research and development department and the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), the Magic Gold merges gold with an alloy of ceramics, thus becoming the only 18-carat gold that is truly scratch-proof. Technically, only a diamond could alter it!
After the announcement of this victory, the award will be officially presented to Hublot in front of the 1,200 guests of the Red Dot Gala Award ceremony to be held on July 3rd. The Big Bang Meca-10 Magic Gold will then be exhibited at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany.
